What is Hookah Sickness?
"Hookah sickness" or "shisha sickness" refers to the symptoms some people experience after smoking hookah. The symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include: Headaches, Dizziness or Lightheadedness, Nausea, Shortness of Breath, Increased Heart Rate and Fatigue or Weakness.
If someone believes they are experiencing severe symptoms of hookah sickness, especially due to carbon monoxide exposure, they should seek medical attention immediately.
To minimise the risk of hookah sickness:
- Smoke in a well-ventilated area.
- Limit the duration of your smoking sessions.
- Stay hydrated and avoid smoking on an empty stomach.
- Use natural coals instead of quick-lighting coals, as the latter tend to release more harmful chemicals.
Lastly, it's essential to remember that while hookah or shisha is sometimes perceived as a safer alternative to cigarettes, it still poses health risks, including the potential for addiction and long-term health effects.
